The sun is the ultimate source of energy for virtually all organisms. Photosynthetic cells are able to use solar energy to synthesize energy-rich food molecules. Photosynthesis is a process used by plants in which energy from sunlight is used to convert carbon dioxide and water into molecules needed for growth. This energy is transferred to the photosystems responsible for photosynthesis. Water is used to provide electrons and hydrogen ions but also produces oxygen.
